Boey Tze Zhou: A Visionary in Mushroom Cultivation and Innovation

At MYCES™, we take immense pride in our founder, Boey Tze Zhou, whose lifelong passion for mushrooms has shaped the vision and mission of our brand. Boey’s journey into the world of mushrooms began at the age of 18, when he made the courageous decision to pursue agriculture instead of a career in medicine, despite achieving a perfect CGPA of 4.0 in his pre-university examination.

Boey graduated with First Class Honours in Agricultural Science from Universiti Putra Malaysia and was awarded the Royal Education Award by the Sultan of Selangor during his convocation. This marked the beginning of a remarkable career driven by his dedication to advancing the potential of mushrooms.

A Trailblazer in Mushroom Cultivation

Boey’s passion for mushrooms took root in 2012, when he established his first mushroom farm. Over the years, he has combined traditional knowledge with cutting-edge science to create innovative solutions in mushroom cultivation and applications. His achievements include:

  • Launching the MushGrow brand in 2015 for mushroom growing kits.
  • Pioneering eco-friendly packaging in 2022 by converting mushroom waste into sustainable alternatives to Styrofoam.
  • Filing a patent for soil-less culture techniques for Tiger Milk Mushroom in 2023.

A Global Representative and Research Leader

Boey’s expertise has earned him recognition on the global stage. In 2024, he represented Malaysia as a speaker at the World Mushroom Conference, and in 2025, he was invited to the prestigious China World Mushroom Days, one of the largest international events in the mushroom industry.

To further advance mushroom research, Boey collaborates with institutions like Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and the Sarawak Biodiversity Center (SBC). Together, they explore the health benefits and biomaterial applications of mushrooms.

Boey’s contributions to scientific literature include research papers on mushroom cultivation and biomaterial innovations:

  1. Effect of cultural conditions and inoculum types on mycelial development and fruiting in Pleurotus sajor-caju.
  2. Effect of beeswax and coconut oil as natural coating agents on morphological, degradation behaviour, and water barrier properties of mycelium-based composite in a modified controlled environment.

Recognition and Awards

Boey’s tireless efforts have been recognized with numerous accolades, including:

  • Penang Top Young Agropreneur Award (2016, 2019).
  • Best Penang Organic Farm Award (2018).
  • Top Ten Outstanding Penang Youth (TOPY) (2024).
  • Successful People in Malaysia (2019) by British Publishing House Ltd.

His farm also became the first in Penang to achieve Malaysia Good Agriculture Practice - Pesticide Free (MyGAP-PF) certification in 2024.
